Volunteers       

 

Deseret Hospital loves hosting and facilitating volunteers. We have enjoyed volunteers from the University of Utah Medical School, Brigham Young University, and other schools. You can also volunteer as an individual, family, organization, or group to help with projects at the hospital  and get to know Ghana and its people.

 

Deseret Hospital was founded in 1979 by Dr. Emanuel and Nurse Midwife Elizabeth Kissi. After their medical training in the United Kingdom, they returned to their native Ghana to open this hospital in one of the poorest sections of Accra, Ghana’s capital city. They wanted to serve their fellow Ghanaians. This nearly 40-year journey has meant financial and emotional sacrifice for the Kissis and their children, but it has also allowed them to serve tens of thousands of underprivileged Ghanaian patients—especially mothers and children.

 

Because of its underprivileged patient population, and also corruption in the Ghanaian healthcare system, Deseret Hospital has always struggled for financial stability. It now faces the toughest financial battle of its history, as constant flooding has damaged the hospital so much that it must be rebuilt. The Deseret Hospital Foundation exists to raise funds for this building project, and for the ongoing financial stability of Deseret Hospital. Let us not see this refuge lost to the people of Accra.
